Fear Not! Anxiety Opens the Door to Positive Change


Anyone who has experienced the profound affects of anxiety knows how debilitating it can be. Those who do not understand might simply respond with uncompassionate remarks and tell the person to get over it. Understanding what is anxiety can lead to help for those who are suffering. They will find solutions which they can use throughout their lives.

This type of feeling can overwhelm and render the person helpless. It can come on at any time in a person's life for no particular reason. There are accounts of people who have suffered some sort of trauma, either emotional or physical, who then find themselves filled with tortuous, morbid thoughts and feelings they cannot rid themselves of. Those who have suffered the effects of this type of angst have reported it was as though a chemical reaction had occurred within them. It can catapult one into a state of being where they are afraid to speak, go outside or be in the company of others. Everything in their world becomes dark and filled with thoughts of death.

Identifying symptoms include dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea and / or diarrhea, confusion, headaches and fatigue. The feeling of being detached is what is the most profound and disorienting and causes great despair. Though this menacing feeling may seem to go on and on, there is most certainly hope and help.

The beginning of healing comes with the awareness that there is a problem. Many people seek the help of a trained counselor or psychiatrist, though they must remember the latter may very well revert to drug therapy as a first response. While this may help many during the acute stages, it does not teach the individual how to help themselves.

It is important for the person who is suffering to learn relaxation techniques. This will greatly help with the feelings of shortness of breath and pounding hearts. Sitting quietly in a comfortable area where they will not be interrupted, they can sit and breathe. Breathing is one of the simplest things anyone can do when they are feeling anxious. Taking slow, deep breaths teaches the body to relax and release tight muscles. This can be done many times a day, as often as is possible. Removing caffeinated beverages and alcohol is also recommended. Most people do not drink adequate amounts of water daily and are chronically dehydrated. Dehydration accounts for many diseases and it can lead to the feeling of tightness in the throat and chest. Drinking eight, 8 ounce glasses of water each day will bring the body to a more healthy state. Their diet should contain living foods, including plenty of vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes and seaweeds. Bogging the system down with too much oil, cheese, meat or processed foods causes the system to become depressed because it has to work so much harder.

Those who are unsure what is anxiety can be assured they are not going crazy or that something bad is about to happen. It is the body's way of bringing attention to something that needs rebalancing. Anxiety can bring about life affirming changes in how one lives and can lead to new doors opening where at one time, there seemed there was no light in sight.
